Administration

Although the degrees of MPhil, and PhD are University-wide qualifications, you will be enrolled in one of the University's Faculties of Study.  This will be the Faculty to which your principal supervisor has been appointed.  For example for the EdD, you will be enrolled in the School of Education within the Faculty of Arts and Education and for the MPhil and PhD in Biology you will be enrolled in the Faculty of Sustainability, Environmental and Life Sciences

Research degrees are administered by the Research and Development Board, a University-wide Board chaired by the Pro Vice Chancellor (Research), that includes five academic staff appointed by Academic Council; two postgraduate students, the Director of the Office of Research and Development and up to three members co-opted by the Board.  Reference in this guide to “the Board” means “the Research and Development Board”.  The Research Degrees and Scholarships Committee (RDSC) is a standing committee of the Board with special responsibilities for research students.

The RDSC is responsible for recommendations to the Board on postgraduate research matters, including admissions, academic progress, examination of theses and scholarships.

Your contact with the Board or the RDSC will normally be through the Graduate Centre in the Division of Research and Development.   Staff in the section are available to assist you with enquires about any aspect of candidature or about scholarships.   You are welcome to call in person or by telephone at any time.  Formal submissions about any aspect of your candidature should be addressed to the Secretary of the Research Degrees and Scholarships Committee, Division of Research and Development.

Each Faculty has a Research/Postgraduate Committee which oversees postgraduate research in the Faculty, including provision and allocation of maintenance and research student data collection funds and allocation of conference travel awards.   Each Faculty also has a postgraduate co-ordinator with special responsibility for research student welfare.
