Admission/eligibility

MPhil, LLM(Research) and PhD

The Board may admit as a candidate for the MPhil, LLM(Research) or PhD degree an applicant who has gained the degree of bachelor with honours of this University or its equivalent at another University through a programme of study which in the opinion of the Board incorporated satisfactory research preparation, or who has submitted to the Board evidence of scholarly or professional attainments providing satisfactory research preparation.

An applicant seeking admission to MPhil, LLM(Research) or PhD candidature on the basis of a bachelor degree with honours will normally be required to have gained at least upper second class honours. Appropriately qualified applicants will normally be enrolled in the degree which they intend to complete (i.e. MPhil, LLM(Research) or PhD). Occasionally, however, an applicant for admission to PhD candidature may be required to enrol initially as an MPhil or LLM(Research) candidate, with the prospect of later transfer to PhD candidature.

Details of your candidature, including supervision arrangements, will be included in the offer of admission sent to you by the Graduate Centre.

EdD

For admission to the EdD programme, applicants will be required to have undertaken advanced academic study, research preparation and professional experience. The minimum entry requirements are a four year Bachelor of Education (or other relevant) degree with honours from a recognised university and at least three years relevant professional experience. Students who have an MEd degree will be considered on a case-by-case basis for credit. Candidates who do not meet the admission requirements may be offered a place in a preliminary programme designed to prepare them for admission to the doctoral programme. The specific studies to be completed within a preliminary programme would be determined in each case by the Programme Committee.

Details of your candidature, including supervision arrangements, will be included in the offer of admission sent to you by the Graduate Centre.

Research Masters with Training

    or

  • b) have a bachelor degree requiring at least 3 years equivalent full-time study

    and:

  • (i) have successfully completed a graduate course requiring at least one year of equivalent full-time study; or
  • (ii) have evidence of progessional attainments (of at least two years full-time duration or equivalent) relevant to his or her proposed research field; or

  • c) Satisfy the Manager of the Graduate Centre that he or she has scholarly or professional attainments providing satisfactory research preparation.

MEd (Research)

The Master of Education (Research) is a one-year research degree designed to provide the education profession and the community in general with leaders capable of addressing critical issues in educational practice, policy and research.

It is designed for:
  • teachers, educational administrators, and other education professionals who seek to extend and deepen their expertise in Education;
  • professionals carrying out educational duties in other relevant fields who seek professional development and renewal; and
  • those planning to proceed to higher degrees.

Students undertake a research dissertation with a methodology component (18 points) and 6 points of coursework in their area of specialisation. This is a research-classified course, and students complete a research thesis of approximately 40,000 words.

Applicants for admission must normally hold: a Bachelor's degree requiring at least three years of full-time study or the part-time equivalent and a graduate-entry course in education requiring at least one year of full-time study or the part-time equivalent, or a Bachelor of Education, or equivalent, requiring at least four years of full-time study or the part-time equivalent. Students may apply for up to two units, or six points, of credit for professional workplace learning or work completed through accredited professional development courses or continuing education. Credit may also be granted for Masters-level units completed in other courses at Murdoch or at other higher education institutions, as long as these units were not used as part of a completed qualification. The total credit for workplace learning and/or units shall not exceed 6 points for the Master of Education (Research).

Combined Master of Applied Psychology/PhD

This course combines the professional coursework and practical placements of the Master of Applied Psychology course with the research requirements of a PhD. On successful completion, students will be awarded both degrees. The course takes four years (or part-time equivalent). In the first year, students enrol in the first year of the MAppPsych program; in the second, third, and fourth-years, students conduct a research program on a professionally relevant topic and complete external placement requirements. The first year is offered on a fee-paying basis; the remaining years are fee-free and students are eligible for scholarship support.

Applicants must apply separately for entry into both courses, indicating on each application that they are also applying for the other course. Graduates are able to use these qualifications to register with the State Registration Board to practice as a psychologist. Applicants should hold, on admission, a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree, with Honours, in Psychology, or a Bachelor of Psychology four-year degree, or equivalents. Competition for places is strong. Students with overseas qualifications who may be accepted into the course need to ensure that, should they wish to seek registration within Australia after graduation, their undergraduate qualification meets the requirements of the relevant psychology registration board for equivalence to a four-year Australian degree in Psychology.

Admission to the PhD is dependant on performance in the first year of study for the MAppPsych.

Doctor of Human Resource Management (DHRM)

A candidate for the DHRM must hold a Masters of Human Resource Management or equivalent level qualification or be able to demonstrate equivalent standing. A person with recognised industry experience of over 5 years is permitted to enrol within the programme but is restricted from commencing their research thesis component until such time the have successful completed 24 points of coursework.
