Professional Development Programme for Research Supervisors

The professional development programme for research supervisors is currently under revision and will recommence in Semester 2, 2009 under the auspices of Organisational Capability.

One resource which may be of use to supervisors now is the fIRST website, a resource developed for research supervisors in Australia. The resources are restricted to members only, but Murdoch University is a member and login details are available from Suzanne Knuiman in the Graduate Centre.

Supervisor Masterclass - Friday, 12 June 2009 9.30 - 12.30 - Club Murdoch

Creating the 7 Secrets of Highly Successful Research Higher Degree Students (for research supervisors)

Hugh Kearns and Maria Gardiner from Thinkwell (a subsidiary of Flinders University) have been funded under an IRU Australia grant to present a series of courses for postgraduate research students and research supervisors at IRU Australia universities. The Flinders group will be at Murdoch University from 10 - 12 June 2009 this year. Courses for students have been listed on the GREAT programme's webpage: http://www.research.murdoch.edu.au/gradcentre/great.html and are open to all postgraduate research students at Murdoch University. Supervisors are most welcome to attend, as well.

Creating the 7 Secrets of Highly Successful Research Higher Degree Students (for research supervisors) will be presented on Friday, 12 June 2009 from 9.30 - 12.30 pm.

Course Description:

You know what your research higher degree (RHD) student should be doing, but it just doesn't seem to be happening. Despite your best efforts to set up good habits for your student, it does not work. Why is this, and what can you do to make completing a RHD easier for your students and you?

Students attending the 7 Secrets workshop have consistently reported a marked improvement in their progress towards completing their RHD. Now they have asked us to please tell their supervisors the same things!

This course gives you practical strategies to deal with common problems such as:

  • Supervisor/student relations
  • Dealing with Writers' Block
  • Attitude (or lack thereof!) in relation to the RHD - it's not a Nobel prize
  • Getting your student to seek help when they are stuck
  • The student who never has enough time
  • Treating the RHD like a job
  • Keeping on going when the going gets tough

For further details or to book into this seminar, please contact Suzanne Knuiman in the Graduate Centre.
