Part-time & External Enrolment

Part-time Enrolment

Applicants for part-time candidature need to guarantee that they will be able to devote a minimum of 15 hours per week on average to their higher degree research in each year of their candidature.

If you propose to carry out your research in the course of your employment and use your employer's facilities, you must, within a month of receiving the offer of a postgraduate place, arrange for the Board to receive a signed statement from your employer or his/her authorised representative, giving:

  1. consent to your enrolment as a research student;
  2. a commitment to allow you sufficient time to pursue your research studies;
  3. approval for the use of the employer's facilities for this purpose; and
  4. where appropriate, the name of a person chosen from within the organisation where you work who could be recommended as an associate supervisor.

A form and a set of guidelines for your employer will accompany your offer of a place.

Should your employer find it necessary to restrict temporarily the time you may spend on your research, the employer must notify you, your supervisor(s) and the Board, indicating the period of time involved.  In such circumstances, the Board may grant you leave of absence, or in certain circumstances, it may be necessary to consider termination of your enrolment.

External Enrolment (Remote Candidature)

In some circumstances MPhil, LLM(Research) and PhD students may undertake most of their research outside Perth.

Each application will be considered on its merits.  A candidate for the degree of PhD will be required to spend a period of at least six months (not necessarily continuously) at the University during his or her candidature. In exceptional circumstances this requirement may be waived on application by the candidate.

Library and other facilities necessary for postgraduate research must be available at the student's location.

The University expects that there will be regular contact between the supervisor and the student at approximately monthly intervals.  If the research project involves experimentation, provision will usually need to be made for the supervisor to visit the site at least occasionally.  At the time of admission, agreement will need to be reached on how the transport costs of the student and the supervisor will be met.   It is normally expected that these costs will be borne by the student, or if appropriate by his or her employer or sponsoring organisation.  It is recognised that the frequency of contact referred to above may be impractical for students situated some distance from the University, and in such circumstances it may not be possible to provide adequate supervision unless a competent associate supervisor is available at the student's location.  Such cases will need particular consideration at the time of application. The EdD is not available externally at present.
