Teaching & Learning Centre

The Student Learning Section of the TLC can provide assistance to postgraduate students in a number of ways.  The staff cater for both native speakers of English and students for whom English is a second language (ESL).

The TLC provides:

  • Workshops
  • Individual consultations
If you need help with your learning skills you may get personal assistance by telephone, fax, e-mail or individual appointment.  For example, you may like general advice on writing thesis proposals and research articles and theses, as well as the mechanics of grammar, punctuation, referencing and style.  Support services are available in a number of other areas of learning skills including numeracy, time and stress management, note-making and critical thinking.
  • Thesis Editing
Unfortunately, resources are not available to provide a complete proof-reading and editing service.  Student Learning staff can usually provide detailed feedback and advice (on language rather than content, which is the supervisor’s role) on no more than a single chapter of a thesis.  Their role is to help you improve your writing, not to “correct” it for you.  The final responsibility for the finished thesis lies with you, including proof-reading.

It is very important that you start your writing early and get regular feedback from supervisors (and student learning staff, as necessary) in order to develop good research writing skills.  The presentation of seminar and conference papers and discussion with others working in the same field, is vital.   This ensures awareness of standards and provides valuable feedback.  The final stages of your research degree may be too late to rectify writing problems that should have been consistently addressed throughout your candidature.

During working hours you can contact the Teaching and Learning Centre on 9360 2142 or 9360 2531

After hours, the Student Learning Section can be contacted by leaving a message on the answering machine on (08) 9360 2531 or facsimile machine on (08) 9310 8480.  Please give your name, program of study, a contact number (preferably where we can reach you during working hours) and details of your request when leaving a message.
