Writing Up Away From Perth

Under certain circumstances you may request permission to complete the writing of your thesis away from the direct supervision of the University.  This situation most commonly arises when a candidate wishes to obtain employment or accept a research fellowship abroad or interstate.

Candidates frequently underestimate the time it will take to prepare a thesis away from the University, out of contact with a supervisor and while under pressure from a new activity in employment or research.  Requests for permission to complete your thesis away from Perth will normally be approved only if the thesis is at an advanced stage of preparation.  In the case of students in 'non-laboratory' areas, this means that at least a first draft of the thesis has been completed to the satisfaction of the supervisor.   For students in 'laboratory' areas it means that all the experimental work has been completed, together with a substantial part of the experimental section of the thesis.

Requests should be submitted to the Manager, Graduate Centre together with a supporting recommendation from your supervisor.  This should be done well in advance of your proposed departure from the University.   If you do leave the University without first having obtained the Board's approval to complete the writing of your thesis away from the University, you may prejudice your candidature.
