(05-08-2008) Nominations for Membership of ARC College of Experts in 2009

The ARC is inviting people with appropriate expertise and experience from within higher education, industry and public sector research organisations to become members of its College of Experts.

As women are under-represented on ARC advisory committees, high-quality nominations from women are particularly encouraged.

The Australian Research Council (ARC) College of Experts works closely with the Australian research community to support the advancement of knowledge and contribute to national innovation.  Members of the College assess and rank proposals for Australian Government funding, make funding recommendations and provide strategic advice on emerging disciplines and cross-disciplinary developments.

Commencement
Members of the ARC College of Experts are appointed for up to three years. Nominees for appointment to the College would need to be in a position to make themselves available, should they be appointed, to begin assessing proposals for funding in January 2009.

Time commitment
Membership of the ARC College of Experts requires a significant commitment of time.  To assess proposals for funding, the College meets in Canberra for one week in April and one week in August each year.  Nominees must be available to attend these meetings.
Members of the College communicate frequently throughout the year, mostly by email.  Members may also be called upon to perform additional work for the ARC.

Remuneration
As part-time holders of public office, members of the ARC College of Experts are paid an annual fee which is determined by the Remuneration Tribunal.

Expertise Sought
The ARC is seeking nominations from individuals with particular expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Biological Sciences and Biotechnology
  • Engineering and Environmental Sciences
  • Humanities and Creative Arts

Further information can be found at http://www.arc.gov.au/about_arc/CoE09_nomination.htm

Nominations
Initial nominations must be received by the Grants and Information Office by COB Tuesday 12th August 2008. Please complete the Nomination for Membership COE form and email to Jennifer.davis@murdoch.edu.au. Your nomination will be considered by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) and you will be advised within 24 hours whether your nomination has been approved for submission of a formal application to the ARC.

Application Submission
Final applications must be received by the Grants and Information Office for submission to the ARC by no later than COB Wednesday 27th August 2008. Please note late applications will not be accepted.

(08-07-08) NHMRC Partnerships: Creating effective collaboration between policy research

NHMRC Partnerships represent a major new focus for the NHMRC. They aim to lead to more effective connections between decision makers who design policy and researchers, and to improve the availability and quality of research evidence to help inform the policy process.

NHMRC Partnerships will help create partnerships among decision makers, policy makers, managers, clinicians and researchers. It will provide funding and support to create new opportunities for researchers and policy makers to work together, to define research questions, undertake research, and interpret the findings.

$108 million has been allocated over the first two years of this initiative.

It is anticipated that the NHMRC Partnerships will initially fund two types of awards: NHMRC Partnership Projects; and NHMRC Partnership Centres for Research Excellence.

NHMRC Partnerships will create new funding opportunities for researchers, and enable them to carry out substantial research programs, publish policy-relevant research in leading journals, and have access to funding to support training, mentoring and partnerships. The schemes will enable researchers to draw on and create teams from various disciplines, including the social sciences (such as economics, education, epidemiology, ethics, management, psychology, and sociology), as well as medical and engineering sciences. They will also develop a better understanding of how their work is viewed by those who use it.

An outline of this new funding can be downloaded from www.nhmrc.gov.au/grants/partnerships.htm

Please direct your initial enquiries by email to jennifer davis or phone 9360 6373.

(28-05-2008) Release of the revised ANZSRC - Australian and New Zealand standard Research Classification

During the past 18 months the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has been working with the sector to update the 1998 Standard Research Classification and replace it with an Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classification (ANZSRC).
The ANZSRC was released on 31 March and updates the RFCD codes with 'Field of Research' codes as well as refreshing the socio-economic objective (SEO) codes.  The ANZSRC has been significantly expanded with about 40 per cent more research codes than the 1998 classification.  This aligns the classification more closely to the research currently being undertaken in Australia and New Zealand, and will reduce the volume of research categorised as "not elsewhere classified".

Implementation of the ANZSRC across government and other organisations will begin from 1 April 2008, with the aim of having organisations using the new classification from 1 January 2009
