NHMRC Project
Grants and Fellowships
The NHMRC funds research on the basis of scientific excellence through
competitive peer review mechanisms. It encourages applications in all
research areas and all disciplines, from biomedical research to clinical,
health services and public health research. The Project Grants scheme
is the Council's main avenue for the support of research in universities,
medical schools, hospitals and other research institutions. Further

Types of Project Grants
The duration of most grants is three years, although a five year
grant may be awarded in accordance with specific eligibility criteria.
A Project Grant can be defined as an award for the support of a scientific
investigation proposed by one or more of the staff of an institution.
This investigation will have objectives of mutual interest to the NHMRC,
the institution and the investigator. Grants may provide funding for
salaries for research workers and assistants, equipment, maintenance
and other specific expenses. NHMRC Project Grants may be one of six
