Publications & IRMA

The Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) comprises research income and research publications data submitted by universities each year.

The collection of data is important for a number of reasons including up-to-date personal curriculum vitas, archival history, performance indicators, and reporting.

The most important reason of course is that data collected on four of the publication categories during this period is sent to DIISR as part of the 2009 Higher Education Research Data Collection. DIISR then use this data to calculate IGS (Institutional Grants Scheme), RTS (Research Training Scheme) and RIBG (Research Income Block Grant – for income only) allocations. In short, a proportion of income the University receives from DIISR is calculated on the number of research publications and income its staff and students have produced.

If you have published in 2008, as a staff or student member of Murdoch University, you will need to enter your publication details into the IRMA System. The IRMA System has a variety of publication categories available to you and we encourage you to complete an entry for every publication you have, regardless of whether it is one counted by DIISR or not. Of these various categories, the four DIISR categories which require subsequent verification are:

  • A1 Books – Authored research
  • B1 Book Chapter
  • C1 Journal Articles – Refereed article in a scholarly journal
  • E1 Conference Publications – full written paper - refereed

The above publications need to be entered into the IRMA System by 24th April 2009 (please refer to submission guidelines). These publications will be verified and then audited to ensure that they meet with the DISSR requirements. There will be an appeals period this year, which will allow for further verification material to be forwarded to this office should it be required. This appeal period will not be an opportunity to enter further publications.

I hope you will find all the information you require on this website, but should you have any difficulty or any questions concerning the collection, your Divisional/School Coordinator can assist you.

Thank you for your cooperation!
