Selection Process and Timing

The Research Degrees and Scholarships Committee will meet in the first two weeks of December to rank all candidates. The first round of scholarship offers will be posted in mid-December. Applicants for the APA are assessed on academic merit. Applicants for MURS are ranked on academic merit and research potential. An applicant’s ranking will not be affected by age, or having applied to another institution. Competition for awards is intense, and generally only applicants with an Honours 1 or Equivalent will gain a first round offer. The Research Degrees and Scholarships Committee in consultation with the Division of Study will allocate each applicant a score. This score will comprise points gained from undergraduate record, graduate qualifications and research potential and, where appropriate, a score for being in an area of research strength. The following information will help in the assessment of your individual research potential:

  • Publications. The emphasis on sole or senior authorship in refereed journals and/or appropriate books, but information on any publication should be detailed. This might also include publications in non-refereed forums: journals, technical reports, conference proceedings, conference posters, web based items, performances, or works of art.

  • Relevant work experience. Please provide details on skills acquired as part of sustained relevant work experience in the area of proposed research, which directly bears on and enhances your research capacity. If you are able to fulfil either of the above criteria, please supply relevant details in an attachment to your application.
